Primavera Porteña
Piazzolla through the sound of two saxophones and piano.
About the workTango & milonga
Tango and milonga from Argentina and Uruguay, centred on Piazzolla’s Cuatro Estaciones Porteñas, with La Cumparsita connecting the programme to the tradition.
The tango of Argentina and Uruguay has travelled from the dance halls to international concert stages. Composer and bandoneonist Astor Piazzolla played an important part in that development, enriching tango with elements of contemporary classical music and jazz.
Piazzollesca is steeped in tango and the related milonga. Alongside Piazzolla, the programme features Fernando Muslera, a pianist, composer and arranger from Buenos Aires, and Guillermo Lago, the composing name of Dutch composer and saxophonist Willem van Merwijk.
Piazzolla’s Cuatro Estaciones Porteñas, the four seasons of Buenos Aires, forms the centre of the programme. The music leads listeners through the seasons and their changing moods.
La Cumparsita by Matos Rodríguez of Montevideo, arranged by Muslera, has a special place in the concert. This tango from the older tradition offers another perspective on the music from which the programme grows.
