About the workMeandering musical dreams
A programme about dreams and imagination, prompted by a dream of Arno Bornkamp’s. With Klaas de Vries’s Katsu!, arrangements by Thomas Beijer and a story read by the musicians themselves.
Après un Rêve — Meandering musical dreams was developed in collaboration with writer, arranger and pianist Thomas Beijer. Dreams as a gateway to the imagination run through the programme, with music and spoken text connecting dream landscapes and memories.
Its origins are personal. In the summer of 2024, a fragment from Klaas de Vries’s Twee Koralen accompanied Arno Bornkamp in a dream. Moved by the experience, he asked his longstanding friend to write a new work for Trio Abril. The result was Katsu!, a substantial composition centred on a search for resonance and eternity.
Katsu! is surrounded by new arrangements for two saxophones and piano by Thomas Beijer. He draws on music inspired by dreams, by composers such as Schumann, Mendelssohn, Liszt and Fauré. Fauré’s Après un Rêve naturally has a place in that selection.
Beijer also wrote the narrative that connects the compositions. The musicians read it themselves during the concert, with music and story together shaping the programme.
